Their forays into caves-often exploring them shortly before city mandates and bulldozers permanently filled or sealed them-are miniature epics. I admire the dedication and scholarship of Charlotte and Hubert Rother, who pieced together stories of settlement, development and abandonment of more than two dozen caves by ragamuffin children, brewers, entrepreneurs, and criminals. Lost River Caverns was named after the Lost River, a crystal clear underground waterway. The second half of the Twentieth Century being a period of cultural and ecological abjuration, the human impact of the cave systems underneath Saint Louis was nearly lost forever. These caves were used by the Osage Indians that lived in the area, by the French fur traders who usurped them, by the German immigrants that made Saint Louis a beer town. Crystal Cave in Berks County was the first show cave to open in Pennsylvania, with official tours beginning in 1871, shortly after it was discovered. Go to 4th traffic light and turn left onto Penn Street. A beautiful pool of water inside Indian Echo Caverns show cave near Hershey, Pennsylvania. Turn left at bottom of exit ramp onto Main Street (Route 412 south). Take Route 309 north to I-78 east to Hellertown (Exit 67). Located in Hellertown, Pennsylvania, Lost River Caverns is a popular tourist destination. It is also a popular spot for spelunking and rock climbing. Continue 1/2 mile to Lost River Caverns on the right. The cave is open to the public for tours and there are several camping and hiking trails in the area. Spread across 15 acres, Crystal Cave is the most visited cavern in the state since 1871. At 2nd traffic light in Hellertown (Penn Street) turn right. Crystal Cave has various natural formations, and it has been labeled as the first show cave in Pennsylvania. (NB: Having excavated 2500 sq ft of the caves under the Cherokee Brewery Stockhouse, I am slightly biased in my review.) Here are a couple of show caves in Pennsylvania that you must visit as soon as possible for a unique and beautiful experience. ![]()
